Accelerating mobile app development for EdTech leader Study.com

A deprecated AngularJS app serving 30 million monthly students, no in-house mobile team, and rising security risk. Winmill migrated it to React and Ionic in six months.

  • Worked from day one for 30 million monthly users

At a glance

Client
Study.com, an online education platform
Situation
A mobile app on a deprecated framework, needing full replacement with no staged migration
Scope
Complete front-end migration to React and Ionic
Technology
React, Ionic

The project

Study.com, a leading EdTech platform serving more than 30 million students monthly, had hit a technological roadblock. Its mobile app was built in 2016 on AngularJS, a framework Google officially deprecated in January 2022. With no security patches or technical updates coming, the app that millions of students relied on was standing still.

The challenges

  • Escalating security risk. A deprecated framework means no more security patches, and the vulnerability exposure grows every month.
  • Stalled innovation. Technical limitations made it nearly impossible to ship new features, blocking planned developments like AI-assisted lesson plans.
  • Missing expertise. Study.com didn’t have a dedicated in-house mobile team to execute a high-stakes framework migration.

The solution

Winmill recommended migrating to React paired with the Ionic framework already in use. React brought abundant developer resources, extensive community support, and the cross-platform flexibility of a library rather than a monolithic framework. The engagement moved fast: less than three weeks from initial contact to project start.

The results

  • Six months, on schedule, on budget. The migration ran from October 2022 into 2023 and launched as planned.
  • Flawless on day one. Despite requiring a complete front-end replacement with no staged migration, the new app worked from the moment it shipped.
  • A platform ready to move again. With a modern, supported framework underneath, Study.com can ship new features to its 30 million monthly users instead of patching around a dead framework.
