Hudson, NY - Local 1199SEIU and Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson announced Apr. 7 that they'd reached a tentative agreement on a four-year contract after seven months of negotiating.
The deal, which will be retroactive to Jan. 1, will raise pay for nurses and other workers by 6.5% and limit increases in their health-care costs to 6%, the union said. It also protects workers' rights to keep union representation if the hospital is merged with or becomes affiliated with another health institution: Columbia's parent company, Columbia Memorial Health, became affiliated earlier this year with Albany Medical Center, which 1199 spokesperson Mindy Berman described as "vociferously anti-union." The hospital is in Columbia County, about 35 miles south of Albany, and 1199 represents slightly more than 800 of its 1,400 employees: 207 registered nurses and 612 direct caregivers, professional and technical workers, and service and maintenance workers.
