Cisco highlights evolving wireless security concerns

A recent report from Cisco Systems revealed new security threat trends that wireless network mangers should be aware of. The research suggests hackers are largely changing strategy and focusing more of their efforts on fewer, stronger and more personal attacks.

According to Cisco, the evolution of cybercriminal tactics reflects the changing ways hackers are making their money. Mass spam attacks netted approximately $1.1 billion annually in June 2010. As of June 2011, that figure dropped to $500 million.

The security provider estimates that personal, targeted attacks can be approximately 40 times more lucrative for hackers than simple mass spamming.

According to eWeek, spear phishing attacks work through enticing potential victims to open malicious web links, just like spam attacks. But to increase the odds of converting potential victims, spear phishers gather personal information to help create more convincing traps. This sensitive information is often gathered from intercepted emails and hacked social media accounts.

Companies should take note of this trend and educate employees on the potential threats. Wireless network managers should also update policy and protection to account for the rise of employee mobile device use in the workplace.
