Federal CIO steps down

Federal CIO Vivek Kundra is widely regarded as one of the most high-profile advocates of improved IT efficiency in the United States.

Kundra recently announced he plans to step down from his position, in order to take on a new role at Harvard University.

Since his appointment as the first U.S. CIO in 2009, Kundra has promoted the adoption of cloud computing in government agencies and branches, as well as advancing various infrastructural changes designed to make IT more efficient.

The White House officially congratulated Kundra on his appointment at Harvard and stated that it plans to transition smoothly. A replacement for Kundra has not yet been announced.

A White House spokesperson said the government would work to continue "these remarkable gains in changing the way the federal government manages IT." According to the spokesperson, "Vivek’s impact on cutting waste and making government work better for the American people will continue to be felt well beyond his departure from federal service.

Kundra's strategic technology consulting experience led him to propose many IT policy changes, including the "cloud first" policy that required all government branches and agencies begin migrating applications to the cloud.
