A Global Solution
Multinational manufacturing giant Procter & Gamble put on-line education to work for them using WinMill's Web Campus. With 147 plants worldwide, it is not easy to coordinate training and travel expenses for company-wide initiatives. When their highly successful three-day New Manager Training classroom course increased in demand, they wisely considered moving it to the Web to decrease costs, improve maintainability, and broaden access.
However, many were concerned that leadership skills could not be taught through the classroom at all, let alone the Web. They brought their concerns to Penn State University's Schreyer Honors College. In collaboration with distance educators at the University, WinMill helped P&G to convert their existing documentation to an interactive, on-line course that would effectively communicate the skills necessary to lead new managers to success in their unique corporate culture.
The Internet Advantage
Through a careful design that leveraged technology effectively, WinMill was able to exploit learning advantages unique to the Web. For example, by lengthening the course availability from three packed days to several weeks, new managers are given more time to reflect on and apply course material on a day-to-day basis, increasing comprehension and retention. Through the use of Web facilitators who observe and comment on student exercises, New Managers reap the benefits of the hidden capital of experienced managers. And by requiring publicly posted discussion responses to key questions, P&G enables a rich inter-cultural discussion of New Manager issues and solutions that could not occur as extensively or freely in the classroom.
The result is that today Procter & Gamble has increased demand in all plants worldwide for this essential training, and students and facilitators are benefiting from what would otherwise be a costly and largely inaccessible course.
