 Leading medical device manufacturer Respironics uses their powerful web site to deliver critical product information to customers. Unfortunately, nearly one third of their clients do not have onsite Internet access. In order to make their sitebased catalog available to these clients,
Respironics wanted to distribute the entire site on CD as simple HTML files. Only one thing stood in the way: how to make the product search work? All proposed solutions required distributing a desktop database and runtime engine, which implied lengthy development schedules and platform-specific customizations. None of them promised to look like the original web site.
WinMill proposed a unique strategy: load all the product information into flat text files, and then implement a search using Flash MX and Actionscript. The CD search page would look
exactly like the one on the public web site, but it would pull information dynamically from the text files instead of using a database. With the enormous popularity of Flash and its platform independence, anyone with a CD ROM player could then use the product catalog!
 Respironics was intrigued by the idea, and partnered with WinMill to build the CD version of their web site. The results were spectacular; the entire project was completed in less than three weeks, including the creation of a utility that enabled Respironics easily create a new CD whenever their public web site was
modified. Respironics clients have been delighted to have product information at their fingertips, eliminating the need to call for customer support. In turn, Respironics is now fielding fewer customer services calls and has been able to redeploy those resources to revenue-generating activities.
