Taking it On-Line
According to SRI, the on-line learning market is expected to grow to more than $20 billion by 2005, and Cisco Systems reports that 70 million people will be learning on the Internet this year. Visionary Learning Express, already well established in the print world as publishers of test preparation books, wanted to be on the frontier of that growth. Their plan was aggressive: make courses and practice tests available on-line through an e-commerce site that could deliver customizable content to individuals and institutions in record time. They turned to WinMill Software, leaders in on-line education, to make it happen.
WinMill began with its signature Discover & Define process, uncovering and specifying the requirements needed to make the transition to the Web successful. A key factor was the need to target niche markets within the on-line education community and to create virtual campuses that would satisfy the unique educational needs of Academics, Civil Service, Law Enforcement, and more. WinMill designed a dynamic, template-driven site based on a mix of customized and "packaged" solutions that could respond to the career objectives of each student. By adapting its Web Campus course engine and its On-Line Education Forum™ (OLEF) to dynamically distribute educational material and provide a student message board, WinMill was able to accelerate the production schedule to meet Learning Express' imminent deadline.
Selling Courses through Web Campus
Learning Express knew that business to business sales would be a primary component of their success. Their business plan included the ability for institutions to license all or parts of their site. WinMill developed the ability to create customizable gateways, so that the integration with an institution's own site and their co-branded portion of Learning Express would be seamless and transparent.
Learning Express' new site, LearnATest.com, was built in ColdFusion and runs on Microsoft SQL Server. It was deployed in a redundant, clustered server environment to ensure maximum up time and high performance, and has been received with great excitement by both Learning Express and its clients. With its open architecture and expandable infrastructure, Learning Express' share of the robust on-line education market is growing daily.
